Storage Unit

The storage unit is a non-volatile memory in a computer system which provides a very large amount of space for data storage for the future use. Since, the main memory of the computer system is volatile, costly and of less storage capacity, secondary memory is used to store large amount of data and programs for the future retrieval. Secondary storage is non-volatile in nature. It means that it does not lose its contents when the computer is turned off. It is also known as backing storage or external memory. The popular secondary storage media used in the personal computers are: floppy disk, hard disk, optical disk and flash disk.
