Napier's Bones

John Napier, a Scottish Mathematician did a considerable amount of work on aids for calculation. The most notable of which was the invention of logarithms 1614 A.D. He also devised a set of rods for use as multiplication aids. These rods were carved from bone and are often called Napier's Bones. We can easily make a set of ourselves by copying the multiplication tables into cards as shown in the given figure. This also shows how to use the rods once we have cut them out.
