Central Processing Unit

The Central Processing Unit, commonly known as CPU, is the most important part of the computer system. Every task to be done by a computer must be interpreted and executed by the processor. This makes the processor the most important component on the motherboard. This is the reason why the processor is called the brain of a computer.

Every CPU has three parts which are:
  • Arithmetic and Logical Unit
  • Control Unit
  • Memory Unit (Primary Unit)
CPU mainly performs the following functions:
  • It controls the transmission of data from input devices into memory.
  • It processes the data held in main memory.
  • It controls the transmission of information from main memory to output devices.
  • It performs all the arithmetic and logical calculations.
